THE VIRTUAL WORLD
Prologue — The Last Afternoon
Before the Dive
The world doesn’t always change with an explosion.
Sometimes there are no sirens, no earthquakes, no warnings written across the sky. No one runs through the streets shouting that something extraordinary is about to happen.
Sometimes, everything begins with something so ordinary that nobody thinks to remember it.
A quiet afternoon.
A familiar room.
And a single click.
Late afternoon sunlight slipped through the bedroom window, casting long, golden shapes across the furniture.
Outside, life carried on as usual. Cars passed along the street. Somewhere nearby, a television murmured behind an open window. Voices rose and faded, blending into the familiar sounds of a city that had no reason to stop.
It was the kind of afternoon people rarely remembered.
LYRIA was twenty-five, with short black bobbed hair touched by violet at the tips, thin-framed glasses, and bright purple eyes that rarely stayed still when something caught her interest.
And right now, something had caught her interest completely.
On her computer screen, a title glowed above an unfamiliar landscape.
THE VIRTUAL WORLD
Beyond the lettering stretched a world of distant mountains, endless forests, and towers rising above the clouds.
LYRIA leaned closer.
“Not bad.”
She scrolled through the information, reading with growing curiosity.
The system promised something that ordinary games had never been able to offer: a fully immersive experience through Full Dive technology.
Not a character moving across a screen.
Not an avatar controlled from a chair.
You.
Your movements. Your senses. Your presence.
An entire world waiting to be experienced as though it were real.
LYRIA adjusted her glasses.
“That’s a pretty big promise.”
She had spent countless hours exploring imaginary worlds. She knew the satisfaction of defeating a difficult enemy, the excitement of discovering a hidden path, and the particular frustration of spending an entire evening searching for an item that turned out to be completely useless.
But there had always been a barrier.
A screen.
She could watch a digital sunset, but never feel the evening breeze.
She could walk through a forest, but never smell the trees.
She could stand before a magnificent castle, but never truly sense its height towering above her.
Now, apparently, that barrier was about to disappear.
And LYRIA wanted to know whether the experience could possibly live up to its promise.
“All right,” she murmured. “Let’s see what you’ve got.”
A soft snore came from the bed.
LYRIA turned.
Zack, her little pug, was sleeping with the complete confidence of a creature that had never worried about a deadline in its life.
He had claimed a generous portion of the mattress, his small body curled against a pillow. Every few breaths, his flattened muzzle produced a faint, ridiculous snort.
LYRIA smiled.
“Very helpful, Zack. Thank you for your expert opinion.”
One of his ears twitched.
That was the extent of his contribution.
“Thought so.”
She returned her attention to the screen.
For all her teasing, she was genuinely excited.
She wanted to discover whether a virtual sky could feel as vast as the real one. Whether the ground would respond naturally beneath her feet. Whether she could reach out and touch something that existed only as information.
Perhaps she would start with something simple.
A tree.
A patch of grass.
The surface of a river.
There was something wonderful about the thought that an ordinary sensation might become extraordinary again.
She glanced toward the bed.
“You’re missing out, you know.”
Zack continued sleeping.
“Fine. More adventure for me.”
The Full Dive device rested near the computer.
LYRIA picked it up and examined it one last time.
It was strange to imagine that something she could hold in her hands might open the way to a world larger than anything she had ever explored.
She turned it over, checked its fit, and glanced back at the access screen.
Everything seemed remarkably straightforward.
No elaborate ceremony.
No dramatic countdown.
Just a connection waiting to be made.
“That’s it?”
She had expected something a little more theatrical.
Perhaps an ominous warning. A mysterious voice. At the very least, a spectacular loading screen.
Instead, the system waited patiently.
LYRIA laughed under her breath.
“Well, I guess I’ll have to provide the drama myself.”
She stood up, carrying the device toward the bed.
Zack had not moved.
“Excuse me, Your Majesty. I believe that’s my side.”
She sat down beside him.
The little pug opened one eye, considered the interruption, and decided it was beneath his attention.
LYRIA gently shifted the pillow and lay back.
Almost immediately, Zack wriggled closer.
Without opening his eyes, he pressed his warm little body against her side, sighed contentedly, and settled back to sleep.
LYRIA looked down at him.
“Seriously? You have the entire bed.”
A small snort.
“An excellent argument.”
She scratched him gently behind one ear.
Zack leaned into her hand without waking.
For a while, LYRIA simply stayed there.
The sunlight was still bright beyond the window. She could hear the traffic outside, the distant voices, the ordinary rhythm of the afternoon.
Nothing felt unusual.
Nothing suggested that the moment deserved to be remembered.
She looked at the device in her hands.
Then at Zack.
“Okay, little guy. I’m going on an adventure.”
He didn’t respond.
“Try not to miss me too much.”
Another sleepy grunt.
LYRIA smiled.
“I’ll be right back, Zack.”
It was such an ordinary thing to say.
The sort of promise people made without thinking, because they had never been given a reason to doubt it.
She stroked his head once more.
Then she settled against the pillow and put on the Full Dive device.
For a moment, LYRIA lay completely still.
She could feel the mattress beneath her.
Zack’s warmth against her side.
The gentle movement of air coming through the window.
All the little sensations that made her room familiar.
She took a slow breath.
There was no fear.
Only anticipation.
That wonderful feeling of standing at the beginning of something new, with no idea what might be waiting beyond the first step.
“Okay,” she whispered.
A mischievous smile crossed her face.
“Surprise me.”
The clock read:
17:26
LYRIA initiated the connection.
At first, nothing happened.
Then the sounds of her bedroom began to fade.
Not suddenly, but gently, as though someone were turning down the volume of the world.
The passing cars grew distant.
The voices outside disappeared.
Even Zack’s quiet breathing seemed to drift away.
The feeling of the mattress dissolved.
Then the warmth of the little body resting beside her.
For a brief instant, LYRIA felt suspended in a space without weight or direction.
There was no floor beneath her.
No ceiling overhead.
No familiar room waiting at the edges of her vision.
Only darkness.
She waited.
Somewhere far ahead, a tiny point of light appeared.
It was barely visible at first.
A distant star in an endless night.
LYRIA focused on it.
The light began to grow.
Slowly.
Then faster.
Until it expanded beyond anything she could see, filling the darkness with a brilliance that swallowed every remaining shadow.
And then—
Back in the bedroom, the afternoon continued.
Sunlight still entered through the window.
The computer remained on.
LYRIA lay motionless on the bed, the Full Dive device covering her eyes.
Zack slept against her side, occasionally shifting in search of an even more comfortable position.
Outside, cars continued along the street.
People talked, laughed, hurried home, and went about their lives.
Nothing in the room had changed.
Nothing appeared out of place.
And somewhere beyond the light, LYRIA was about to open her eyes.
On another world.
